ReCo News for April

Turn those chip bags, candy wrappers, coffee bags, and other non-stretchy packaging (aka Crinkly Packaging) into durable construction blocks through our partnership with ByFusion.

We’ve been piloting Crinkly Packaging since January and are now getting ready to launch a dedicated canvas bag for this material this summer (canvas bags are currently in production!). Then you'll be able to recycle it every month as a core material without purchasing seperate bags!

In the meantime, you can continue to purchase the Crinkly Packaging Pink Bag add-on in the Member Dashboard Shop, and we’ll deliver it at your next pickup.

This April place accepted electronics in your ReCo Pick Bag for responsible recycling, including small electronics, cords, and devices (working or not). All items should fit inside the ReCo Pick Bag. Through Triangle Ecycling, materials are refurbished when possible and otherwise broken down for recycling, helping keep harmful components out of the landfill.

As bonus items, you may also include metal bottle caps and wine corks using your own seperate small bags (grocery size or smaller). Please place these bonus bags inside your black waterproof bag for pickup.

We have a lot of new members! If you’re just getting started, take a quick look at our one-page pickup guide. Here are a few common pickup prep mix-ups to avoid:

  1. Not placing canvas bags in black waterproof bag
  2. Not returning all canvas bags, even if unused
  3. Extra material beyond what fits in the provided bags without purchasing additional capacity

We pay to recycle many of these materials through trusted partners. If you include 3x more styrofoam than fits in the provided bag, the cost to recycle that alone can approach your monthly membership fee. Please be sure to purchase extra capacity when needed.

ReCollective OneStop combines Hard-to-Recycle pickup and Food Scraps/Organics collection into one convenient home service. Twice per year, OneStop members can choose between compost back or free recycling add-ons. Make your selection in the Member Dashboard Shop by April 7. Depending on the option you choose, it will either be delivered by mid-April or can be put out with your next regular pickup.

February’s ReCo Pick was scrap metal, and all materials were delivered to Foss Metal Recycling in Durham. Members recycled items like keys, pots and pans, wires, and hardware, helping ensure these materials were properly recycled through a local partner and kept out of the landfill.

When memberships are paid with plastic, up to 5% of your monthly dues go toward processing fees. Choosing Bank Draft helps keep more of your membership focused on recycling and supports our young service on the path to sustainability.

If you’d like to switch, you can update your billing method anytime in your Member Dashboard under Account → Billing → Payment Method. Add your bank account and set it as your default.

We’ve restocked our Fillaree products in the Member Dashboard Shop. Stock up and refill your dispensing bottles again and again. When your refill pouch is empty, just give it a quick rinse, set aside the pump for future use, and place the pouch out with your ReCo pickup. We’ll return it to Fillaree for reuse, keeping more packaging in circulation and out of the landfill.

Maybe your municipality curbside recycling doesn’t accept #1 plastics (clamshells) or #5 plastics, or you’re simply looking for another solution. The ReCollective partners with Orange Recycling Services in Durham to responsibly recycle these materials. Add a 13-gallon #1 or #5 plastics bag in the Member Dashboard Shop before your next pickup, and we’ll deliver it for you to fill at your convenience.

Reference our new #1 and #5 plastics guide to learn more. Also see our other one page guides.
